Tom Prasada-Rao: songs

Smack

Before the previous election (Bush v Kerry), Cary and I had a songwriting duel from Tampa back east to the now shuttered Main Street Cafe in Homestead, shadowed by the state that stole the 2000 election for our now retired prez.

Cary won hands down for "Back When I Was Grown Up" off her album Yellow but I still have a soft spot for this song. Sort of a Middle Eastern Rap:
IN A LITTLE HILLTOP VILLAGE
IN THE NEW AFGHANISTAN
BUSINESSMEN AND BURKHAS
TALK SUPPLY AND DEMAND
THEY TRADE THEIR MANIFESTOS
FOR LOCKHEED F-16’S
THE FALLOW FOR THE FERTILE GROUND
THAT HIDES THE POPPY SEEDS

AND I’LL NOT EVER BE AS GRATEFUL
AS I KNOW I AM RIGHT NOW
ALL THE WARLORDS IN THE WHITE HOUSE
SHOULD STAND UP AND TAKE A BOW
FOR EVEN THOUGH BECAUSE OF THEM
I HAVE TO WATCH MY BACK
I’M THANKFUL THAT I’M FREE TO NOW
GO OUT AND SCORE SOME SMACK

SMACK IS BACK SMACK IS BACK
PRAISE THE LORD PASS THE HAT
FOUR MORE YEARS FOUR MORE WARS
THANK YOU JESUS THANK YOU GEORGE
PRAISE THE LORD PASS THE HAT
SMACK IS BACK SMACK IS BACK

NOW I’LL ADMIT I DID MY SHARE
OF SMACK BACK IN THE DAY
WHEN AFGHANISTAN WAS VIETNAM,
AND GUANTANAMO WAS A BAY
I JUST WISH WE KNEW BACK THEN
WHAT WE KNOW NOW FOR SURE
THE BEST WAY TO MAKE PEACE
IS TO START ANOTHER WAR

BUT I AGREE ITS STUPIDITY
TO GO AFTER SADDAM
NOT BECAUSE HE NEVER REALLY
EVER HAD THE BOMB
NOT BECAUSE DICK CHENEY’S
MAKING MILLIONS OFF IRAQ
BUT BECAUSE THERE’S JUST NO EVIDENCE
IRAQ HAD ANY SMACK

SMACK IS BACK SMACK IS BACK …

IN THE SHADOW OF THE KHYBER PASS
OSAMA’S RAISED A GLASS
THINKS HE’S FINALLY FIGURED OUT
HOW HE CAN KICK GEORGE BUSHES’ ASS
KNOWS HE DOESN’T NEED THE NERVE GAS
OR A NUCLEAR ATTACK
HE’LL JUST HIDE AND LET OLE JUNIOR
MAKE OUR COUNTRY SAFE FOR SMACK

BUT WHAT OSAMA DOESN’T KNOW
NOW THAT HE’S GONE UNDERGROUND
IS THAT HE CAN’T KILL OUR BUZZ
AND HE CAN’T KEEP THE BUSHES DOWN
THERE’S JEB IN TALLAHASSEE
THERE’S A GRANDSON WITH THE KNACK
AND THE TWINS AT THE CONVENTION
SINGING ALL YOU NEED IS SMACK

SMACK IS BACK SMACK IS BACK …
