From the recording Smoke & Mirrors

Jagoda, Cary, and I were sitting in the Algonquin - our screened in back porch. Jagoda was brilliant as usual - line after line in our conversation feeling golden. We remarked as we typically do, how one of the lines would make a good song. But this time before you know it, the 3 of us were writing Jagoda's first song! We've created a songwriting monster:

Lyrics

smoke and mirrors

there's a place for poetry / there's a place for smoke
i look into the mirror / til i start to choke
cause i can't see who you're telling me i am

if i say i love you / to the face i see
i have to trust / what you see in me
don't know if i can be who you're telling me i am

I can't see past the shadow i cast
i can't see the greener side of the glass
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors

there's a place in poetry / there's a place in time
when the damage is done / and i cross the line
and doubts fall through the hourglass like sand

so i keep playing / hide and seek
can't roll the dice / can't play for keeps
and you can't stay til i am who i am

I can't see past the shadow i cast
i can't see the greener side of the glass
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors

do you know me better than i know myself
do you see me better than i see myself

I can't see past the shadow i cast
i can't see the greener side of the glass
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors
what if all i am is smoke and mirrors
